Daenyathos Review|Spoilers

Well my copy of the limited edition Daenyathos has found its way into my collection, and shall now hold a place of pride.

This novella contains a prequel story set across M36 starting at the Fall of Goge Vandire and follows the story of Daenyathos, a Soul Drinker who soon grows into a figurehead and will alter the destiny of the entire Soul Drinkers chapter.
Now since not everyone will get ahold of this excellent story for either price reasons or its 1000 copy run, I have posted the plotline here so that you all may know what it entails.

SPOILERS BELOW

The story starts with Daenyathos who is fighting on Terra against the Frateris Templar and the Brides of the Emperor, alongside his fellow Soul Drinkers and an Imperial Guard Regiment. And in the Tomb of Malcador he meets an Imperial Guardsman named Fidelion who tells him that to flee death is worse then death. These words are reinforced by a meeting with Inquisitor Kayede during an Exterminatus mission to destroy a heretical populace who tells Daenyathos that humanity is its own worst enemy and that the Inquisition and Space Marines must lead humanity, lest humanity destroys itself. Through Fidelion and Kayede and their words Daenyathos begins to doubt his current path and joins the Reclusiam to take the Chaplain’s path.

During his training Daenyathos begins writing the Catechisms Martial, a text that he hopes will put the Soul Drinkers spirit on paper. He eventually finishes it and is revered throughout the Chapter, being elevated to the Reclusiarch’s second in command. Eventually the Chapter is tasked to terminate a dangerous heretic named Croivas Ascenian who has committed high crimes against the Imperium and is declared a moral threat. During the hunt for Ascenian Daenyathos speaks with the Reclusiarch Gorosius who tells him he has read the Catechisms Martial and has noticed a worrying piece in it. In the text Daenyathos speaks of humanity as cattle and that the Soul Drinkers and other Space Marines must lead them as the superior beings, however other exceptions like the High Lords of Terra are not included and that means through a paradox since the High Lords of Terra are cattle then the Space Marines who follow them are cattle as well. Unless the Space Marines secede from the Imperium. Daenyathos says he will write an addendum as that is not his meaning, and soon after Gorosius is killed during the hunt as he is eaten by a native predator.

However an enemy scout who survives the massacre later witnesses a giant in black armour tearing his way out of an animal corpse, only to be shot dead by another giant in black armour. Daenyathos reflects on his murder and privately admits that there is no mistake, and that what Gorosius said about the Catechisms Martial is true and that the true plan is to have the Soul Drinkers secede from the Imperium. Daenyathos is then promoted to Reclusiarch and becomes the Master Chaplain, gaining his own recruits and begins cultivating his own flock of those who are loyal to him and his vision. However during the continuing hunt for Ascenian a Space Hulk is raided and Daenyathos is captured by the heretic who begins surgically dissecting him to learn more of the Space Marines.

Daenyathos is able to survive by telling the heretic what makes them Space Marines. The Gene-seed, which Daenyathos claims was created when the twenty Primarchs were created. Of all twenty sons of the Emperor, two were universally despised, and both were murdered by their brothers and hacked up into thousands of tiny pieces, these pieces were used to make the first Space Marines. Whether or not this is true we can only guess but Ascenian believes it and attempts to take Daenyathos’s gene-seed, only to lean in close enough for Daenyathos to bite out his throat. Eventually Daenyathos is found near-death by his fellow Chaplains who take him back and secretly entomb him within the Chapters only Dreadnought.

Daenyathos praises them upon his resurrection and brings out a Chapter relic, revealed to be Fidelion who they have kept alive for over a century. Daenyathos tells his Chaplains and Fidelion of a plan that will start with them slowly turning the Chapter towards the renegade’s path by using the Reclusiam to manipulate them. This plan will take centuries or millennia but will end once the Chapter reaches Terra and fulfils an unspecified goal, but just hearing it causes Fidelion to break down weeping and beg for death, which is quickly granted. Daenyathos says that he must leave the Chapter so that he will turn into a legend over time and become as revered as Dorn himself, upon which he secretly leaves for a world known to the Soul Drinkers only and the Chapter is informed that Daenyathos the Warrior-Philosopher has perished. And eventually not a single man that served with him remained in the Chapter, and the legend was born.

The artwork of the novella is quite amazing. It isn’t fancy CGI artwork or highly lavished painted artwork but rather just pencil drawings, and yet they are better then many advanced art. The simplistic pencil scribblings bring the story to life with excellent captions of the characters, weapons and locations that the novella creates. And some amusing and very very interesting side-markers by the Imperial Fists chapter on this confiscated tome give another point of view to some of the events.

The markings left by the Imperial Fist Dominus tell us that according to the records of his Chapter the Soul Drinkers Chapter never served at Terra during the Siege of the Ecclesiarchal Palace. And that the soldier Fidelion is not on record for any Imperial Guard Regiments at Terra and has never been, he admits that Fidelion may have been left off by accident as Guard records are not as well-kept but he doesn’t believe that is the case.

It mentions that Inquisitor Kayede was executed in 616.M36 for high crimes against the Imperium and that the world Khaal where Gorosius dies cannot be found by the Imperial Fists vast star charts. Kayede’s words while seeming loyal can almost scream Radical, it isn’t a large leap and perhaps his words were the root of the Soul Drinker’s heresy. And Khaal, does it exist?. It is described as an almost impossible to believe world where life has evolved to live out its life-spans in a few hours to survive deadly radiation, and that the day is dark and the night is bright. But this is 40k and that sounds quite possible.

We are also given two conflicting accounts of the Soul Drinkers founding. One tells us they were created from the fast-attack units of the Imperial Fists, however this is denied with a “NO NO NO!” by the Imperial Fist captioner. The second account tells us that the Soul Drinkers were created from the personal guard of High Marshall Sigismund of the Black Templars during the Third Founding. This is remembered by Gorosius so we have no clear way of knowing where the Soul Drinkers come from.

High Point: When Daenyathos reveals his true plans and the manipulations he has put into them I was amazed, the Imperial Fists are right, the Soul Drinkers are heretics and need to die. Plus the conflicting accounts of Soul Drinker and Imperial Fist keep us guessing throughout the novel about who is right and who is wrong. Are the Soul Drinkers intentionally lying or are the Imperial Fists blinded by hate. It can’t be told but we’ll find out eventually in Phalanx, the upcoming final Soul Drinkers novel.

The character Croivas Ascenian is one of the best I have seen in my collection of Black Library. An Imperial Missionary who upon arriving at his new world was to minister the faith of the people, only to experiment on them. The entire population was cybernetically connected to a machine that painfully shocked them whenever they disobeyed and kept them in a permanent state of agony. He did all this just to see what happened. And the atrocities continue on such as marching an entire city into a dark valley to have their minds ripped out and put into the skulls of several psyker children whose power was amplified to destructive superhuman levels, and merging twenty-thousand people into one fleshy mass to try and forge a single being from them. And they only get worse. And his appearance was breath-takingly horrific, the images were excellent and made him into a character to fear.

Low Point: Only one thing bugged me and that was the Reclusiarch seeming to be the head Chaplain. Either its a mistake or the Soul Drinkers Reclusiarch is also their Master of Sanctity, or they dont have that rank at all.
Overall Daenyathos is a very imaginative story that delves into a period of turmoil the Imperium had not seen since the Horus Heresy and the ramifications of choices made during that period, such as Croivas Ascenian becoming a Missionary when in the 41st Millennium he wouldn’t have even been considered.

The Soul Drinkers Chapter is also shown in a totally new light, their dark past is accounted and we see that their secession was not just the temporary anger and madness of one Librarian. It was the result of millennia of planning by the Chaplains and the guidance of a single heretic whose reach was so wide that he orchestrated the Soul Drinkers fall from grace.

I give Daenyathos a 9/10 for its exciting story, its stunning artwork and a new cast of characters that even though this will be their only appearance, they are greater then some Black Library regulars. If only the Soul Drinkers series was about Daenyathos, but we can’t have it all. If you haven’t bought this novella already i’d highly recommend it, hurry only a few hundred copies remain.

Prospero Burns – Finished!

So says author Dan Abnett: Friday July 9th, 2010 marks the finality of Prospero Burns, at least from the standpoint of original written material.  More details on his blog, along with some pictures.  Link below.

Hello again everyone.  It’s that time of year again!  Time for the Heresy-Online Fiction Competition!  This year I’ve got some great prizes to give away.  All thanks to a generous donation from a good friend. (to whom i am eternally grateful.)  I hope you all will submit something for the Competition. :)

Greetings my fellow Heretics!

Its that time of year again folks! Time to begin the:

Heresy-Online Fiction Competition 2010

This is a great year for the Heresy Fiction Competition. This will be the third year we’ve done the Fiction Competition, the second year I have judged it, and the first year we’ve got prizes to give away! That’s right folks, you heard me right, For the first time in the History of the Heresy-Online Fiction Competition, I’ve got a wonderful batch of prizes to give away.

However, with the inclusion of prizes, there will be a new set of guidelines in place. the new guidelines will be:

  • Warhammer 40k or Warhammer Fantasy short story: you will need to writer either a 40k or Fantasy based short story. The subject matter of which does not matter. But the overall setting must be in either the 40k or Fantasy universe. we are a 40k forum after all.
  • 4000-5000 word requirement: In the past two competitions we have had word count requirements of 1500-2000 words. This competition is a serious 40k/Fantasy short story competition and with the inclusion of prizes will therefor demand a more serious effort on the writers part.
  • No Public Voting: with the rampant cheating found in this years painting and conversion contests i have decided that there will be no public voting this year. Instead, i will be judging this years competition. After the end of the submission window, i will read through the entries and shortlist three finalists. I will then choose a winner from the three finalists. That winner will then be awarded the corresponding prizes (see Prize Breakdown).
  • Public Submissions: Last year for the fiction competition we had a secret submission policy. Writer’s posted their stories in the Heretic Ezine/Blog Submission forum. This year we will not be doing that. On the day the submission window opens, there will be a submission thread posted in the Original Works forum titled: “Fiction Competition 2010 Submission Thread”. You will be able to post a link to your story in this submission thread. Your actual entry will need to be posted in the Original Works forum using the title “Heresy Fiction Comp 2010: [Insert title here]“. Then, you can post the link to your story in the submission thread. I will then compile a list of the submitted stories in the OP of the submission thread, and they will be viewable by the public.
  • New Works only: do not submit something that has already been posted here on Heresy in the Original Works section. In order to increase the fairness of the competition, you will be required to write a new piece of fiction. It can include characters that you have already used in the past, but cannot be a story you have already written.
  • No Staff Submissions: Heresy Staff members will not be allowed to participate in the competition.

Please feel free to PM any questions you have about the guidelines to me.

New ‘Book Reviews’ page

A new page has been added to TFF.  One that will, no doubt, be filled with lots of interesting reviews and insight into lots of Black Library novels.

Book Reviews Page

Welcome to the Review Page of The Founding Fields.  This page will be dedicated to all of the reviews that we do of the various BL books.  As of right now it is still under construction but will be updated in the future with links and summaries to the pages where the reviews can be found.

Looking for Staff

Howdy everyone,

I wanted to update you all on things that are going on here on TFF.  I’m looking for someone who would be willing to join me in my endeavor of bringing the masses a blog that is dedicated to the art of Fiction and all its inherent glory.  Currently, we’ve got a fair few features that are already being done here
on The Founding Fields, like my recurring Featured Fiction, as well as regular updates concerning Black Library News and other tidbits.  However, there are other things that I would like to add as well. Things like: Reviews, helpful how-to articles, Q&A sessions, and other fiction-related features.  However, i’m stressed to do this on my own.  I’m not quite the best reviewer.  I’ve done plenty of articles, namely my “Writer’s Circle” discussion posts that I’ve done for Heresy-Online, however I’d like to do more of them and feature them here on TFF.

So I’d like to appeal to the rest of you for this one.  I’m looking to add at least one other person to TFF in an author position.  Preferably someone who is keen on reviews.

  • So, how do you apply?

quite simple really.  Just head over to the Contact Me page (you can find it on the right-hand sidebar under “Sectors”) and send me a message.  Be sure to use the subject “Application.”

  • What should you include in your Application?

What I’m looking for is evidence of your prowess in reviews/etc.  Send me some links to some of your other reviews/material, and I’ll have a read and see if you are the candidate I’m looking for.

  • What’s in it for you?

Other than an Author position on one of the newest, hottest blogs on Fiction ever to grace the presence of the interwebs?  lol Well, if you have a knack for reviews, I’ve got some friends inside the Black Library who I can talk to and perhaps be able to get some advanced reviews set up for new, and upcoming books.  So, a spot on the staff of TFF and the possibility of advanced reviews for Black Library novels!? what more could you want?

  • Anything else you should know?

This isn’t a paid gig.  Unfortunately.  I’d love to be raking in dough for this project, but I’m not.  I’m running a free blog on wordpress atm, and I’m hoping to switch to a self-hosted blog soon.  And then I’ll be paying monthly to keep this place afloat… So anyone who applies must know that this is a no profit deal.  Perhaps later on down the line, when this place really kicks off and i think of something that can bring in the money, there may be pay in it for you.  However, for now and for the foreseeable future, we work for free.

  • What if you have more questions?

If you’ve got any other questions that are not answered here, please feel free to contact me regarding them.  Simply use the Contact Me page and I’ll get back to you ASAP.

cheers everyone! Lets kick this up a notch!

Black Library News – July

This month has some special news in store for you all.  I’ve got the scoop on the Black Library News for July.  Check it out!

Black Library News

A Universe of Adventure

Issue 5    Volume 1

Compiled by your humble servant Brother Czarny

New and Noteworthy

BIG news of the month – in case you have been ignoring me (and I will not be ignored!) Graham McNeill won the David Gemmell Legend Award for his book Empire. The photo on the left is Graham accepting his award in all his Scottishnish. As part of the award the winner receives a replica of Snaga – which Graham has said has already drawn blood, so he thinks’ the daemon is still inside. Well done and congrats!

Nick Kyme, our own version of a house elf, takes a step back in time with his fantasy novel Grimblades ($8.99).  Taking place during the reign of Emperor Dieter IV, The Grimblades are halberdiers of the Empire and part of the army of Prince Wilhelm trying to defend Reikland against hordes of greenskins. The Grimblades try to survive the invasion, while at the same time help thwart a plot to kill the prince so that they stand a chance to fight another day.

-

The Horus Heresy story continues with Nemesis ($8.99) by BL veteran writer James Swallow.  The story picks up after the massacre of Isstvan V, with civil war defacto across the universe.   In the shadows of the Imperial Palace secret councils convene to send assassins after the arch-traitor Horus.   At the same time Horus tries to win in a quick strike by sending his own assassin against the Emperor.   Over 1 million copies of the Heresy novels are in print and this book is expected to continue that success.

-

Ragnar the web king has a couple of special offers only available on the website.  The next audio drama is Throne of Lies, a Night Lords story by Aaron Dembski-Bowden.  There are two (2!) POD novels of BL classics – Farseer by William King and Marks of Chaos , an omnibus by James Wallis.  Additionally, a new hardcover Soul Drinkers novella will only be available on the website.

Whispers from the Warp

Courage and Honour, The Chapters Due and A Thousand Sons are among the top selling SF books at the moment. A Thousand Sons has now been on the overall list for over 18 weeks.

Chris Wraight is the guest blogger on the Black Library website: http://www.blacklibrary.com/Blog/Guest-Blog-Sword-of-Justice.html

Rob Sanders is grilled about writing Redemption Corps and he pulls no punches:

Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest gossip, insights and breaking news because when news breaks – we blame the other guy for doing it.

Looking Forward

Space Marine Battles is back with another action-packed story – Hunt for Voldorius.   Old debts must be settled and new dangers encountered.  Kernax Voldorius, daemon prince and warlord of the Alpha Legion, has long perpetrated a reign of terror that bled across the stars, leaving billions dead.   Kor’sarro Khan of the White Scars Chapter is commanded to hunt down and destroy Voldorius.   Tracking the beast for over a decade, Kor’sarro finally brings the monster to battle on the world of Quintus, where he joins forces with the Raven Guard.   The daemon must die, but to kill it they must take on a world that has totally fallen to Chaos.

Fear the Alien is a first for The Black Library in that it is stories told from the stand-point of or about alien races of the 41st millennium.   Editor Christian Dunn has blackmailed…er, I mean gathered some of the best Black Library authors to give their take on alien space.  Dangerous races seek to destroy humanity wherever they turn – the brutish orks, the ravening hordes of the tyranids, the unrelenting necrons and the mysterious forces of the tau and the eldar.  Across the universe, humanity and their defenders, the Space Marines, seek to eradicate these xenos threats.  Yet all they can hope for is another day of survival – for to stand against the alien is to enter an unending war.

C.L. Werner strikes again!   Temple of the Serpent is the next book in the stories of Grey Seer Thanquol.   After a series of failures Grey Seer Thanquol is offered a chance to redeem himself by going to the island of Lustria to kill the Prophet of Sotek.   Dogged by assassins and stranded in a foreign land of giant lizards, the temple cities and endless jungle, Thanquol must use all of his cunning and magic if he is to come out alive.   C.L. will be a Black Library guest this year at Games Day in Baltimore so come by and talk to him about this character.

Last Bits

The BL Promotions department has been roused out of a sound sleep to come up with some great items.  We now have Ulrika bookmarks floating about – oversized so you can’t lose them, but still handy for marking pages without an unsightly scuff mark.  Contact me if you want some.  We also have some limited run post-card prints for Sword of Justice and Wulfrik.  I am also hording them, but would be happy to spare some.

Yes, still talking about Gamesday until you remember it! The estimable Dan Abnett will be making a limited appearance at the BL booth.  The rest of the time you can see him promoting the upcoming Space Marine DVD.  We can also confirm – Mike Lee, Nathan Long, Clint Werner and the ever popular and ever shifty Gav Thorpe. For those of you who are planning to stop by or would like to come circle the date – 21 August – on your calendar.  Aside from Mr. Abnett the rest of the authors have been indentured to sign the day away, so keep them busy or they start plotting.

Just to give you the inside track, we will be producing an abridged version of Horus Rising as an audio book for January 2011.  I have asked to give us all parts to read, but THEY want to use professionals. It will be priced at $29.95 for 5 disks and close to six hours of killer story.

"Just Another Day" – Featured Fiction

For this edition of Featured Fiction, i bring you a piece of writing by Heresy-Online member The_Inquisitor.   His entry, “Just Another Day”, into the Heresy-Online Fiction Competition 2009, clinched the victory for him last year.  It’s a great piece with some exceptional character.  Please Enjoy.

Just Another Day

by:  The_Inquisitor

Even His footsteps sounded ominous, echoing throughout the corridors of the vessel, alerting the crew to his presence. Playing cards, gaming dice and other indicators to their lack of work, were stuffed hastily into pockets and robes as the clanging of the footsteps grew ever louder. Each member of the crew knew how He would react were they found slacking in their duties. Although they were all felons and criminals of various degrees, each of them knew it would be suicide to disobey or anger Him. It didn’t matter who you’d killed or what you’d done in the past, on the Quaestus Questus you did what you were told or you died. There was no alternative. And the man purposefully making his way down the narrow walkway was the man giving the orders.+++Captain Xotuxo paced the corridors at this time every night cycle. It had become second nature, a habit which now sat firmly within his Spartan routine. A utilitarian to the extreme, the Captain only saw the practical use of something, its beauty eluding him. In his line of work there was no place for sentiment, no place for emotion. A man with these things in his life would have caved into the nightmares long ago; would have lost his mind. The grilled decking below his boots carried the metallic clang of his footsteps down the passage, fracturing the deadly silence of the early morning hours. The intimidating confidence of the man created a mixed aura of respect and fear around him.Xotuxo knew perfectly well that his hefty footsteps would alert the Corsair crew to his arrival, a tactic which he had picked up from his predecessor. If the crew fear you enough then you need not say a word to them. The Captain expected the men to be unfocussed in their work; after all he wasn’t commanding a Navy Frigate. Xotuxo could still hear the words of his former commander in his ear. Deep and gravely, the voice was unforgettable.

“You see lad, if you go about sneakin’ up on ya men, only to find ‘em gamblin’ and smokin’, then there’s only two things you can do. You either eject the lot of ‘em into the void, or you let ‘em get away with it.

You go with option number one, and by the end of the week you won’t have a bloody crew left. And of course if you go with option two, then they lose the respect for ya, and before you can blink you got a mutiny on your hands.

So, why find them at all? Make it clear you’re on ya way, they’ll stop what they’re doing and the fear is still there. See?”

The Captain grinned to himself, recalling his old mentor’s words of advice. Maybe if the fool had stuck to them a bit better himself, he wouldn’t have woken up with a dagger between his shoulder blades. First Mate Xotuxo had led the mutiny himself, usurping the leader of the Corsairs with the murderous efficiency he had become infamous for.

That had been seven years ago, and Xotuxo had ruled the bridge of the Quaestus Questus with an iron fist ever since.

With all incriminating evidence stowed away, the deckhands scrabbled back to their labouring. By the time He had reached their position, every crew-man in the vicinity was hard at work, cleaning and maintaining the ship they served.

As He walked amongst them, none dared to meet his gaze. Only a fool would stare into the eyes of the Captain and hope to remain unnoticed; and last thing any of them wanted was to get noticed.

The clunking footsteps grew fainter and a sigh of relief escaped from mouths of several less experienced corsairs. As usual, smirks from more aged pirates soon followed. Those who had been crew members for a reasonable duration knew too well that they were unlikely to get caught for shirking their duties. The Captain was too easy to detect.

Every night the crew believed themselves to be steps ahead of Xotuxo. Some were even starting to doubt his capabilities as a commander. On the lower decks, there were whispers of mutiny.

Onesimus Kir de-activated the laser-cutter with the press of a well-oiled stud on the grip. The finesse of the tool, combined with his steady hand had allowed him to finish his work in half the time it would have taken one of his lackeys. The highly focussed energy beam emitted by the device could serve not only as a cutting tool but also as a welding instrument. Down on the lower decks, energy-couplets and cryo-cells were often in need of repair.

Although the Quaestus Questus was an efficient and feared vessel, its venerable age meant that repair crews were constantly put to use across the entire ship. The gloom of the lower decks was where Kir’s repair detail found themselves assigned most of the time. A duty Kir resented.

When he joined the Corsairs six years ago, Kir had great aspirations for himself. He believed this would be a fresh start to his stagnant life; a way to acquire prosperity. He assumed that it wouldn’t take him long to work his way up the ranks to a position of power.

As a Commercia Trader on Cerebra, he had made a decent living, dealing in agricultural technologies. Educated at the Scholum Prodegia Primaris, he had been well schooled in economic trade and application. He had intended to use this knowledge to make a name for himself on Cerebra.

However, not long after founding his business, Kir came to realise that his theoretical studies and the practical application were worlds apart, and that it was exhausting work merely to make even a marginal profit. Soon, the young trader came to hate his work, his surroundings and ultimately his life. He had needed an escape. The Quaestus Questus had offered it.

As part of the infamous crew of criminals and desperados, six years flew by. Six years in which Kir achieved little headway in his aspirations. His dreams of power and riches remained unfulfilled.

Kir re-activated the void-shield surrounding the cryo-cells he had been repairing, the monotonous humming replacing the silence. With a grunt he hoisted himself up from the meshed decking, using the gantry running above as a handhold. Kir had an athlete’s body, developed over the years of dutiful labouring aboard the Corsair vessel. His dagger like features revealed little emotion, and hard eyes, accustomed to the darkness of the lower decks, sat sunken into his skull.

Straightening himself up, Kir checked over both shoulders, ensuring that he was alone in the corridor. He had endured enough on this god-forsaken ship. It was time for him to formulate his own destiny. With a final sigh, Onesimus Kir slipped the laser-cutter into his robes and disappeared into the shadowy depths of the lower decks.

Of all the Quaestus Questus’ sections, from the illustrious Command Bridge to the ancient workings of Engineering, Xotuxo loathed the lower decks the most. The dank and murky air was saturated with the stench of promethium and sweating bodies. This part of the vessel housed several major power couplets and power cells but little else resulting in filth and grime caking most surfaces. But regardless of its aesthetic appeal, it was part of His ship and therefore in need of perambulation.

Heavy steps brought Xotuxo through the stiflingly narrow corridors, his eyes still adjusting to the darkness that enveloped him. As usual, He made no effort to muffle his deliberated boot steps.

Steadying his nerves, Onesimus Kir heard the menacing footsteps echo down the corridor. Concealed in the recesses of a maintenance alcove, Kir was cloaked in darkness, nearly invisible in the unlit passage. Looking down at the laser-cutter he now clutched, Kir grimaced. With little warning his hand began to shake uncontrollably, the device rattling in the dark.

Checking his wrist chronometer as he went, Xotuxo turned the corridor corner. Ahead lay Maintenance Alcove 7R.

Seeing the intimidating figure pass by his sanctuary, Kir activated the cutting tool, sending a shrill hum out across the corridor. With a clumsy leap he jumped at the Corsair Commander with a yell.

Decades of bar fights and conflicts with the authorities had given Xotuxo a sixth sense. On hearing the humming shriek coupled with the primal shout, Xotuxo’s immediate reaction saved his life.

Doubling himself over, the Captain felt the heat of the laser singe the hairs on the back of his neck. The assailant, carried by his own momentum, was thrown over Xotuxo’s crouched body, landing sprawled on the deck. Without hesitation, the Captain straightened up, towering over the prone crew member.

His boot crushed every bone in the assassin’s hand, extracting a blood curdling scream from the man. The same boot then moved itself to the assailant’s face, breaking bone, cartilage and everything in-between. The man’s screaming ceased abruptly, his jaw smashed beyond repair. After a placed kick to the ribs for good measure, the Captain, barely out of breath, knelt next to the broken man before him, grinning. He spoke with a hacksaw voice.

“Nice try lad. Shame you don’t get a second chance.”

Onesimus Kir’s face melted like candle wax, his skull mutilated. De-activating the laser-cutter, Xotuxo stood up, straightening his jacket. Touching a button on his collar, he spoke to unseen servants.

“Hotham. Get a clean-up crew down here. Someone’s made a right mess.”

Turning on his heel, Captain Xotuxo stalked away into the darkness, his attention needed elsewhere.
