The Top 5 Must Read Comics For This NCBD (26 February 2014)

Fantastic-Four-01

Milo, aka “Bane of Kings”, runs down the Top 5 Must-Read Comics hitting shelves this new comic day from a variety of publishers.

Wow. Could this be the best week yet in comics? It’s certainly up there – I’m getting a considerably large amount of sixteen comics either digitally or in print – so it should be a very good week for sure. Here’s my full pull-list, just to let you know what titles I’m going to be selecting from, and you can find out the full list of titles here. Without further ado then, let’s get this show on the road.

DEADLY CLASS #2

DeadlyGridFinal

Story: Rick Remender | Art; Wesley Craig, Lee Loughridge | Publisher: Image Comics | Price: $3.50

It’s Marcus’s first day at the Kings Dominion High School for the Deadly Arts. A locker full of death threats, a schedule full of brutality, and whispers in the hallway about his mysterious past…which is fast catching up to cut out his freshly broken heart.

WHY? There are three books coming out by Rick Remender this week – Deadly Class, Uncanny Avengers Black Science, and any one of these issues could have been picked in Deadly Class’s place, but because this series is the newest with only one issue required catching up for – this should be a must read as this series started off incredibly strongly. Hope things get even better from here.

FANTASTIC FOUR #1

Fantastic-Four-01

Story: James Robinson | Art: Leonard Kirk | Publisher: Marvel Comics | Price: $3.99

“THE FALL OF THE FANTASTIC FOUR” PART 1

The world’s greatest comics magazine begins anew with Marvel’s First Family, the Fantastic Four! But as the brilliant MR. FANTASTIC, the compassionate INVISIBLE WOMAN, the ever lovin’ THING & the hot-headed HUMAN TORCH embark on a strange mission, they aren’t met with new beginnings, but an untimely end! As the family of cosmic explorers head towards their darkest hour, who could possibly be behind their downfall? And how is one of their oldest enemies, the sadistic dragon known as Fing-Fang-Foom involved? Prepare for the fantastic!

WHY? With the relaunched Fantastic Four by James Robinson – things cannot get any better than they are now. Robinson is doing a fantastic job with All New Invaders and has done with Earth 2 over at DC before his untimely departure, but DC’s loss is Marvel’s gain, so it’ll be interesting to see where he can take the reader in the new adventures of the First Family.

SUPERMAN: LOIS LANE #1

Superman-Lois-Lane-01

Story: Marguerite Bennett | Art: Emanuela Lupacchino, Meghan Hetrick, Ig Guara, Diogenes Neves, Guillermo Ortego, Ruy Jose, Marc Deering | Publisher: DC Comics | Price: $4.99

Lois Lane is known for chasing down stories — but what happens when the story is her family? As her father gains more power in the government, Lois’s sister Lucy has become involved with a deadly drug scene! Meanwhile, Lois thought she was rid of the influence of Brainiac, but now she finds that the the computer tyrant of Colu is calling out to her again!

WHY? A Lois Lane-centric ongoing series would rock and it’ll be an interesting experiment to see how Marguerite Bennett handles her as a character in this bumper sized one-shot. Whilst I didn’t read the Joker’s Daughter one-shot, the Lois Lane one should hopefully be an incredibly awesome read and I’m looking forward to seeing how Bennett has improved since I first discovered her work with Batman Annual #2.

TOMB RAIDER #1

Tomb-Raider#1

Story: Gail Simone | Art: Nicolas Daniel Selma | Publisher: Dark Horse Comics | Price: $3.99

Superstar writer Gail Simone picks up Lara Croft’s story where the smash hit Tomb Raider game left off-in a new ongoing comics series! Following the game acclaimed for its bold and sophisticated new vision, this series launches Lara Croft on the formative adventures that will change her life forever!

The official continuation of Lara Croft’s story!

The 2013 video game sold over 3.5 million copies! ‘Tomb Raider is the quintessential example of a reboot done right.’ -Gaming Trend

WHY? I played my first Tomb Raider game last year with the reboot and loved it so much that Lara is now one of my favourite female characters so it was a no-brainer that I was going to pick this book up – I’ve been looking forward to it since the news first broke, so it should be very interesting to see where Simone takes Lara in her ongoing series that follows the continuation from the awesome game.

THE WAKE #6 (of 10)

The-Wake-06

Story: Scott Snyder | Art: Sean G. Murphy | Publisher: Vertigo Comics | Price: $2.99

My name is Leeward, and this is where my story begins…’ Our story jumps two hundred years into a flooded future where nothing is the same. The second half of THE WAKE starts here!

WHY? And so begins the second half of the incredibly awesome mini-series from Batman writer Scott Snyder! This is one of my most anticipated books and there was no way I was missing out this title from the list – the first five issues have just been incredible, and it will be very interesting indeed to see where Snyder and Murphy take us from here. This is a must buy.
