Top 5 Must Read Comics For This NCBD! (26 March 2014)

Sandman-Overture-02

Milo, aka “Bane of Kings”, runs down the Top 5 Comics that are must reads on this New Comic Book Day – featuring Marvel, DC, Dark Horse and Vertigo Titles.

Wow, what a week. This is the first week where my pull has reached 20 comics (see all of what I’m getting here), and needless to say I had a very hard choice on deciding what titles to include but in the end I went for these five. ComicList have the full amount of releases here, so if there’s anything I’ve missed feel free to give it a look into. But let’s cut to the chase and get on with the Top 5 Must Read Comics for this New Comic Book Day. If you’re not following any of these series, then you really should think about doing so.

RED LANTERNS #29

Red-Lanterns-29

Story: Charles Soule | Art: Alessandro Vitti |Publisher: DC Comics |  Price: $2.99

The Reds have found their newest recruit: Supergirl! Guy Gardner is hardly equipped to handle a teenaged Kryptonian Red Lantern, so he heads for Earth and hand her off to her cousin, Superman! But Superman is…unimpressed by Guy’s leadership skills – or lack thereof…

There’s a new Red Lantern in town and her name is Supergirl! However, Guy Gardner doesn’t feel like he’s ready to train a Kryptonian so heads back to Earth in the search of her cousin Supeman. This allows for a very exciting title and whilst I was initially doubtful about the whole Supergirl being a Red Lantern idea, Soule – like always, proved me wrong. This is the best Green Lantern book currently on shelves and I can’t wait to see where it goes over the forthcoming issues.

SANDMAN OVERTURE #2 (of 6)

Sandman-Overture-02

Story: Neil Gaiman | Art: JH Williams III | Publisher: Vertigo Comics | Price: $3.99

The Sandman’s epic origin story continues in the second issue of the new miniseries by the superstar team of writer Neil Gaiman and artist J.H. Williams III! In which Daniel enters Mad Hettie’s dream and Morpheus discovers why he has been summoned and what he has been summoned to do.

It’s about time this title hit shelves and I cannot freaking wait. Neil Gaiman is exceptional, and when coupled with JH Williams it makes for a winning combination. This issue should be spectacular and prove just why this was my favourite title of 2013 after only one issue. With Gaiman being my favourite novel writer (Neverwhere, American Gods etc) as well as the excellent main Sandman series, this book should be great.

SILVER SURFER #1

Silver-Surfer-01

Story: Dan Slott | Art: Mike Allred | Publisher: Marvel Comics | Price: $3.99

‘NEW DAWN’ The universe is big. Bigger than you could ever imagine. And the SILVER SURFER, the lone sentinel of the skyways, is about to discover that the best way to see it… is with someone else. Meet the Earth Girl who’s challenged the Surfer to go beyond the boundaries of the known Marvel U– into the strange, the new, and the utterly fantastic! Anywhere and Everywhere… Hang On!

It’s a Dan Slott week! He’s got a brand new title launching this week that has the potential to be very awesome indeed – I’m totally down for anything new Silver Surfer-wise. and this has the potential to be a great read. I’m totally down for anything Slott writes and this book should be awesome – with a Doctor Who esque feel from the title so you can tell that I’m really looking forward to this.

STAR WARS LEGACY #13

Star-Wars-Legacy-13

Story: Corinna Bechko | Art: Gabriel Hardman | Publisher: Dark Horse Comics | Price: $2.99

After a crash landing on a wild planet with her captor-and former flame-Ramid, Ania Solo is having trouble shaking the other bounty hunter on her tail. She’s going to need some help from someone, but when you’re accused of murdering an Imperial Knight, friends are hard to come by!

‘Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardman have introduced me to a new favorite Star Wars character.’-Comic Vine

This title is the superior Star Wars ongoing book at least in my opinion and I’ve flat out loved it so far. Literally, don’t get me wrong – Brian Wood’s Star Wars is good (the last issue aside), but this title is excellent, month after month. If Marvel have any sense at all they’ll keep this creative team and this book around for more issues.

THE WAKE #7 (of 10)

The-Wake-07

Story: Scott Snyder | Art: Sean G. Murphy | Publisher: Vertigo Comics | Price: $2.99

Two hundred years in the future, things are not looking good for the human race. But a mysterious call from the deep could change everything. The epic, flooded future of THE WAKE continues here!

The Wake is an exceptionally awesome book from Snyder and there was no way it wasn’t going to make the final spot on this list. This book has been knocking it out of the park since Day One and as we enter the last three issues of this mini-series it’s going to be a great ride to the finish. Cannot wait.
