Top 5 Comics To Look Out For On 16 October 2013

Batwoman #24

Milo, aka “Bane of Kings”, runs down the Top 5 Comics to look out for that are hitting your shelves today from the likes of DC, Image and Marvel Comics.

Welcome to another Top 5 Comics post. In the aftermath of NYCC and a whole host of new Marvel books from Black Widow to The New Warriors announced, we can start to turn our attention back to the comics that are coming our way now and not next year. ComicList has the full rundown of books to look out for today (as well as for the next two weeks and beyond), and you can check out my pull-list on Comixology and see me talk in more detail about all the books that I’m getting on my new IGN Community Blog. Without further ado then, let’s take a look at the books that you should be picking up today!

BATWOMAN #24

Batwoman #24

Story: JH Williams III, W. Haden Blackman | Art: Trevor McCarthy | Cover: J.H. Williams III | Publisher: DC Comics | Price: $2.99

The battle between Batwoman and Batman begins here—it’s all been leading to this!

WHY? Well, it looks like this is it. I’m really gutted to see JH Williams III and W. Haden Blackman leave this book especially as it is one of my favourite DC ongoing series right now with each issue nothing less of spectacular. I’ve been following this title since #19 having since went back and read Volume One, so it’ll be interesting to see how fitting of a conclusion this is. Hopefully it’s a good send off, because I’m still torn about whether or not I should follow this book for the character after this issue. I’m also having the same dilemma with Earth 2 – should I stick with these two books in the future? Let me know in the comments below.

HAWKEYE #13

Hawkeye #13

Story: Matt Fraction | Art: David Aja | Cover: David Aja | Publisher: Marvel Comics | Price: $2.99

Fraction and Aja continue the surprise comic hit of the century! After a lifetime of decisions both good and bad, Clint and Barney Barton have to realize they are brothers and ultimately, they’re the only ones who can save one another. I mean if they don’t kill each other first.Good luck with that, Barton brothers.

WHY? The wait feels like forever but at last, it’s finally good to be back. Hawkeye #13 sees the long awaited return of stellar team Matt Fraction and David Aja, who are running my favourite Marvel series at the moment and are pulling it off wonderfully well. Each issue of the series that I’ve read so far has been superb and hopefully the return of this book will not disappoint, as it’s certainly going to be my first read of the week. I can’t wait.

HUNGER #4

Hunger #4

Story: Joshua Hale Fialkov | Art: Leonard Kirk | Cover: Adi Granov | Publisher: Marvel Comics | Price: $3.99

THE BEGINNING OF THE END???

• Has RICK JONES failed to stop Earth from destruction?

• The death throes of a universe!

• A hero reborn? The road to CATACLYSM starts here!

WHY? Whist I’m disappointed that Joshua Hale Fialkov and Leonard Kirk aren’t the new creative team behind Silver Surfer, that doesn’t stop me wanting to see how the book turns out as Dan Slott is a damn fine writer in his own right. Hunger however has really been impressive over the last four issues so I’m itching to see how this closes. The best thing we’ve had so far out of Age of Ultron in my view so far is Hunger, and depending on whether or not a cliffhanger is included in this issue (and the scale of it), as well as how well Fialkov manages to tell this final issue,  will decide whether or not I become invested in the upcoming Cataclysm event which looks really awesome.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #8

Justice League of America #8

Story: Matt Kindt | Art: Doug Mahnke, Christian Alamy | Cover: Doug Mahnke, Christian Alamy | Publisher: DC Comics | Price: $3.99

A “Forever Evil” tie-in! THE JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA IS DEAD. But in the aftermath, one of the team’s members uncovers the JLA’s darkest secrets!

WHY? Trinity War was actually a really enjoyable event despite the fact that it turned out to be a mere lead in to Forever Evil. And in the aftermath of the Crime Syndicate’s Invasion, things are certainly heating up for Justice League of America. The Solicit doesn’t reveal much about the issue aside from the fact that it looks like not all of the team may have vanished with the main JL and JLD, and plus – this also looks like it’s going to be my first experience with Matt Kindt, so it’ll be interesting to see how it plays out, as I’m look forward to seeing what exactly this issue is going to focus on now that the Justice League books seem to be connecting with Forever Evil.

ZERO #2

Zero #2

Story: Ales Kot | Art: Jordie Bellaire | Publisher: Image Comics | Price: $2.99

Shanghai, 2019. An opulent skyscraper party full of terrorists looking for fresh funding. Edward Zero is about to sabotage it big time — and then the skyscraper starts to vanish, bit by bit. So maybe he should look into that first?

WHY? The final book on my pull-list (aside from back issues) is the only indie book that I’m picking up this week, however it’s a good one. Ales Kot’s first issue started off strongly so I’m looking forward to seeing where he takes this book. I’m a sucker for a good spy story and this series looks as though it could be right up my street – so hopefully Kot continues the series strongly. It looks as though it could be very interesting indeed.
