Shadowhawk takes a look at the just-released Split Worlds sequel, published by Angry Robot Books.

“The fairy-tale vibe from the cover of the first novel in the series, Between Two Thorns, is well and truly alive in the cover to sequel and is in fact much stronger. Another superb cover from Angry Robot Books.” ~Shadowhawk

Emma Newman’s first novel for Angry Robot, Between Two Thorns, was a magical tale that reminded me of some of the 80s and 90s Disney films (my review). It was touching, heart-warming and entirely kick-ass. Certainly one of the best books I’ve read this year and will no doubt complicate my “best of…” lists later this year, making it all the harder to choose from all the good books I’ve been reading of late. With the just-released sequel, Any Other Name, Emma looks set to continue the adventures of her characters Cathy, Max, and William both in the Nether and in Mundanus.

The star-filled night sky over the London Bridge, the carousels in the background, the blossomed flowers and thorned trees in the foreground, the ornate curved-hilted sword, the full moon, and the cursive letter design all combine to form a truly striking cover. Perhaps as much as the first novel’s cover, Sarah J. Coleman’s work this time around once again hints at where the story shall primarily take place: London (in the previous novel it was London or Aquae Sulis as it is known in the Nether). Sarah has gotten the magical vibe of the novel down perfectly in the cover and has created, once again, a perfect composition.

If I didn’t already have a backlog of books to read next month (courtesy of this poll I’m running on my blog at the moment), Any Other Name would be the first book I read next month. Rest assured that this will be among my first reads for July!

It’s been an interesting year…

Cat has been forced into an arranged marriage with William – a situation that comes with far more strings than even she could have anticipated, especially when she learns of his family’s intentions for them both.

Meanwhile, Max and the gargoyle investigate The Agency – a mysterious organisation that appears to play by its own rules – and none of them favourable to Society.

Over in Mundanus, Sam has discovered something very peculiar about his wife’s employer – something that could herald a change for everyone in both sides of the Split Worlds.
