Horus Heresy: Horus Rising Audio Book.
The first book in the million selling series on five CDs
Horus Rising is an abridged audio book version of the bestselling novel that began the saga of the Horus Heresy. It is the 31st millennium, a golden age of discovery and conquest. On the eve of victory, the Emperor leaves the front lines, entrusting the Great Crusade to his favourite son Horus. Promoted to Warmaster, the idealistic Horus tries to carry out the Emperor’s plans but at the same time the seeds of heresy are creeping into the doctrine of the Legions. Dan Abnett describes the Imperium in its pre-Heresy glory and sets events in motion that will bring about its catastrophic fall. Five disks and over six hours of story read by veteran actor Martyn Ellis bring this bestselling book to life

The Dark Angels underestimate the threat of an ork invasion on Piscina IV and they swarm toward Kadillus Harbour. Sword of Vengence
This is the follow-up to the Sword of Justice and the next book in Warhammer Heroes line.

Schwarzhelm races to return to the site of his recent battles, as does the spy Pieter Verstohlen, evading assassins while trying to discover the truth of the conspiracy that drew him away. Out in the wilderness is Kurt Helborg, Grand Marshal of the Reiksguard. Only he has the indomitable strength of will to hold together the province in its hour of need. Only he can rally the terrified citizens of Averland to resist the infernal powers that beset them.

From Empire soldiers marching to war across the bleak northern wastes, to a lone elf fighting a one-man war for vengeance and the mighty White Wolves, battling against the many foes that besiege Middenheim this novel explores Warhammer Fantasy from all angles.

Helion Rain

Black Library News – October

welcome back everyone to October’s aggregation of Black Library news.

Black Library News

A Universe of Adventure
Issue 8    Volume 1
Compiled by your humble servant Brother Czarny
New and Noteworthy

We begin to rev up the BL printing press this month with some more really exciting books.  In addition to the physical books we have exciting news on other publishing matters from the evil lords of Black Library towers.

Firedrake is the second book in the Salamander series, following the book oddly enough entitled Salamander. When Chaplain Elysius of the Salamanders is taken captive by dark eldar, he faces a fight for survival at the hands of these cruel aliens. The Firedrakes of the 1st Company attempt a daring rescue mission, but much more is at stake than the Chapain’s life. He holds the key to secrets buried beneath Mount Deathfire, secrets that could reveal the damnation – or salvation – of their home world.  Nick Kyme is diligently working on his next book – a Space Marine Battles novel entitled, The Fall of Damnos.

The First Heretic continues the bestselling Horus Heresy series with the story of the Word Bearers. During the Great Crusade, the Emperor castigates the Word Bearers for their worship. Distraught at this judgement, Primarch Lorgar and his Legion seek another path while venting their fury on the battlefield. Their search leads them to the edge of the material universe, encountering ancient and powerful forces. Aaron Dembski-Bowden and the Horus Heresy series are also a powerful force – one not to be missed.  Aaron is hoping to continue the string of New York Times bestsellers and if the initial feedback is an indication he should be there.

Warrior Priests are holy crusaders of the Empire, crushing daemons, witches and heretics alike with righteous fury. These bold men wield death and damnation, with warhammers held high and the word of Sigmar on their lips. In the novel, Warrior Priest, Jakob Wolff is one such warrior, and sets out to track down his brother, whose soul has been tainted by the Ruinous Powers. Darius’ next book is a Warhammer Heroes novel entitled Sigvald, featuring the Chaos champion of Slaanesh, Sigvald the Magnificent.
The latest audio drama ties into the Time of Legends series and it is written by the lore master of the high elves – Gav Thorpe. Aenarion seeks the power of the sword of Khaine to protect his homeland of Ulthuan. The journey is fraught with danger, and Aenarion must confront daemons, spirits and the elemental forces of nature itself if he is to succeed. In drawing the blade from its Black Anvil, he will unleash the ancient and malevolent force that will tear the elven race apart.
Island of Blood is a special novella we have produced in conjunction with the release of the new Warhammer box game. For countless millennia the high elves of Ulthuan have kept watch over the Island of Blood. Shrouded in elven magic and impenetrable mists, its cruel, Chaos-warped peaks hide a wealth of dark secrets – including a powerful relic for the dawn of the Old World, known as the Phoenix Stone. Author Darius Hinks takes the reader on a tale of battle and intrigue pitting the elves against the ratmen and all their vile kin.
Double Eagle brings back an old favourite of Dan Abnett and the Black Library in POD format. Set in the Sabbat Worlds crusade, the Phantine fighter group tries to hold off a Chaos invasion and protect a planet. Action-packed warfare featuring armoured columns and the Imperial Navy.
Whispers from the Warp
Last month we talked about the new e-zine, Hammer and Bolter.  Now, Black Library digital is live. Get it.  Read it.  Live it.  Remember, the undead are not playthings (for most people anyway).
Looking Forward
Dead Men Walking features the Death Korps of Kreig in a battle for the soul of a planet against the soulless.  When the necrons rise, a mining planet descends into a cauldron of war and the remorseless foes decimate the human defenders.  Salvation comes in an unlikely form – the Death Korps of Kreig, a force as unfeeling as the necrons themselves.  When the two powers go to war, casualties are high and the magnitude of the destruction is unimaginable.
Ciaphas Cain returns in his first hardcover novel, The Emperor’s Finest. The search for the source of an alien threat leads Ciaphas Cain to a drifting space hulk.  But when the Reclaimers Space Marines suffer terrible losses, Cain and his trusty aide Jurgen must go it alone.  With the tyranids walking and a group of stowaway orks on the loose, Cain must use all his ingenuity and cunning to escape the space hulk alive.
Wulfrik is the third book in the Warhammer Heroes series and the first chaos “hero” written by C. L. Werner. He is cursed by the Ruinous Powers to roam the Old World to collect prizes to appease the Dark Gods. Within the Chaos powers he finds there is a plot against him and he must now fight against one who would take his soul.
Garro: Legion of One is the second Garro audio drama, telling more of the tale about the loyalist Death Guard. His Emperor-given mission leads him to a ruined warzone, where a secret to change the course of the Horus Heresy will be revealed…
Angelika Fleischer Omnibus – the latest POD book from the vaults of the Black Library.  Features the adventures of Angelika Fleischer, battlefield scavenger, and the star-crossed young knight who is bound to her by his oath to repay her for saving his life.

New and Noteworthy
No new awards this month, but an exciting announcement from Mr. Dunn on a new Black Library product, more on that below.  This month, however, we have maintained the path to total world domination!

Space Marine Battles has quickly proven to be a favourite with fans.  Both of the previous titles Rynn’s World and Helsreach have maintained positions on the Nielsen Bookscan charts.  The latest offering is entitled Hunt for Voldorius by Andy Hoare.   In Hunt for Voldorius old debts must be settled and new dangers encountered.  Kernax Voldorius, daemon prince and warlord of the Alpha Legion, has long perpetrated a reign of terror that bled across the stars, leaving billions dead.   Kor’sarro Khan of the White Scars Chapter is commanded to hunt down and destroy Voldorius.   Tracking the beast for over a decade, Kor’sarro finally brings the monster to battle on the world of Quintus, where he joins forces with the Raven Guard.   The daemon must die, but to kill it they must take on a world that has totally fallen to Chaos.

Fear the Alien features tales detailing the alien races of the 41st millennium.   Some of the best Black Library authors have been gathered in one volume to give a different view of the universe.  Dangerous races seek to destroy humanity wherever they turn – the brutish orks, the ravening hordes of the tyranids, the unrelenting necrons and the mysterious forces of the tau and the eldar.  Across the universe, humanity and their defenders, the Space Marines, seek to eradicate these xenos threats.  Yet all they can hope for is another day of survival – for to stand against the alien is to enter an unending war.

C.L. Werner strikes again!   Temple of the Serpent is the next book in the stories of Grey Seer Thanquol.   After a series of failures Grey Seer Thanquol is offered a chance to redeem himself by going to the island of Lustria to kill the Prophet of Sotek.   Dogged by assassins and stranded in a foreign land of giant lizards, temple cities and endless jungle, Thanquol must use all of his cunning and magic if he is to come out alive.  Grey Seer Thanquol is a classic evil character made for the fantasy world.  C.L. will be a Black Library guest this year at Games Day in Baltimore so come by and talk to him about this character.

Whispers from the Warp
The Black Library is going to start an online magazine for short stories and novellas – new authors and old favourites starting in October called Hammer and Bolter.  The first issue is going to be free and downloadable.  The rest of the details will be available on the Black Library website – www.blacklibrary.com
Nemesis, Path of the Warrior and Enforcer are overall best-selling books on Bookscan at the moment. Eisenhorn, Ravenor and The Founding have all been the top TPSF sellers for over fifty weeks.

A Q&A with Inquisition Wars author Ian Watson:
Clint Werner is the current guest blogger for the Black Library this month:
Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest gossip, insights and breaking news because when news breaks – we blame the other guy for doing it.

Looking Forward

Sabbat Worlds is a hardcover anthology edited and featuring stories by Dan Abnett as well as several close friends writing about the Sabbat Worlds from their viewpoint.  The Sabbat Worlds crusade is a bitter conflict that has spanned decades and can only end in victory or annihilation.  The anthology features some of the Black Library’s best-known authors including Dan Abnett, Graham McNeill, Aaron Dembski-Bowden and many more.

Blood Pact is the paperback version of Dan’s best selling Gaunt’s Ghosts novel. Even though the Ghosts are pulled back from the front lines, they are never far from the action.  When an enemy prisoner is brought in for interrogation, Gaunt is drawn into a murderous web of intrigue.  A cloud of doubt is cast across the administration and the reason for this prisoner’s appearance.  The fate of the crusade may rest upon these answers if Gaunt can survive long enough to find them.

Preparing for the new Ciaphas Cain novel in December, the Black Library’s most dedicated are pleased to release Defender of the Imperium, the second Ciaphas Cain omnibus.  This thick tome features the novels Death or Glory, Duty Calls and Cain’s Last Stand plus two short stories.  Look for Sandy’s new novel – The Emperor’s Finest – his first hardcover out in December.

Last and not forgotten we slid in Zombieslayer by Nathan Long in time to prep you for Halloween.  This is the twelfth book in the Gotrek and Felix series.  The novel features the necromancer Heinrich Kemmler, zombie hordes and the portents of doom – and they don’t even try to hide in a pub!  This follows-up the cliffhanger ending of Shamanslayer and gives G&F a little break before the next novel.

Last Bits
Games Day is just around the corner – a veritable author-rama! The estimable Dan Abnett will be making a limited appearance at the BL booth.  The rest of the time you can see him promoting the upcoming Ultramarines DVD.  We can also confirm Mike Lee, Nathan Long, Clint Werner and the ever popular and ever shifty Gav Thorpe. For those of you who are planning to stop by or would like to come circle the date – 21 August – on your calendar.  Aside from Mr. Abnett the rest of the authors have been indentured to sign the day away, so keep them busy or they start plotting. We have two seminars on tap which are sure to be fun and always give an insight on what is coming out over the next year.
Just to give you the inside track, we will be producing an abridged version of Horus Rising as an audiobook for January 2011.  I have asked to give us all parts to read, but THEY want to use professionals. It will be priced at $29.95 for 5 disks and close to six hours of killer story.  I have been told that other audiobooks are in the works – stay tuned for more information.

Black Library News – July

New and Noteworthy

BIG news of the month – in case you have been ignoring me (and I will not be ignored!) Graham McNeill won the David Gemmell Legend Award for his book Empire. The photo on the left is Graham accepting his award in all his Scottishnish. As part of the award the winner receives a replica of Snaga – which Graham has said has already drawn blood, so he thinks’ the daemon is still inside. Well done and congrats!

Nick Kyme, our own version of a house elf, takes a step back in time with his fantasy novel Grimblades ($8.99).  Taking place during the reign of Emperor Dieter IV, The Grimblades are halberdiers of the Empire and part of the army of Prince Wilhelm trying to defend Reikland against hordes of greenskins. The Grimblades try to survive the invasion, while at the same time help thwart a plot to kill the prince so that they stand a chance to fight another day.

The Horus Heresy story continues with Nemesis ($8.99) by BL veteran writer James Swallow.  The story picks up after the massacre of Isstvan V, with civil war defacto across the universe.   In the shadows of the Imperial Palace secret councils convene to send assassins after the arch-traitor Horus.   At the same time Horus tries to win in a quick strike by sending his own assassin against the Emperor.   Over 1 million copies of the Heresy novels are in print and this book is expected to continue that success.

Ragnar the web king has a couple of special offers only available on the website.  The next audio drama is Throne of Lies, a Night Lords story by Aaron Dembski-Bowden.  There are two (2!) POD novels of BL classics – Farseer by William King and Marks of Chaos , an omnibus by James Wallis.  Additionally, a new hardcover Soul Drinkers novella will only be available on the website.

Whispers from the Warp

Courage and Honour, The Chapters Due and A Thousand Sons are among the top selling SF books at the moment. A Thousand Sons has now been on the overall list for over 18 weeks.

Chris Wraight is the guest blogger on the Black Library website: http://www.blacklibrary.com/Blog/Guest-Blog-Sword-of-Justice.html

Rob Sanders is grilled about writing Redemption Corps and he pulls no punches:

Fear the Alien is a first for The Black Library in that it is stories told from the stand-point of or about alien races of the 41st millennium.   Editor Christian Dunn has blackmailed…er, I mean gathered some of the best Black Library authors to give their take on alien space.

The BL Promotions department has been roused out of a sound sleep to come up with some great items.  We now have Ulrika bookmarks floating about – oversized so you can’t lose them, but still handy for marking pages without an unsightly scuff mark.  Contact me if you want some.  We also have some limited run post-card prints for Sword of Justice and Wulfrik.  I am also hording them, but would be happy to spare some.

Yes, still talking about Gamesday until you remember it! The estimable Dan Abnett will be making a limited appearance at the BL booth.  The rest of the time you can see him promoting the upcoming Space Marine DVD.  We can also confirm – Mike Lee, Nathan Long, Clint Werner and the ever popular and ever shifty Gav Thorpe.
