Top 5 Must Read Comics This NCBD! (23 April 2014)

Daredevil-02

Milo, aka “Bane of Kings”, runs down the Top 5 Must Read Comics hitting shelves this Wednesday.

We’ve got an excellent week of new comics in store for you with some stunning releases from all publishers, including  but not limited to, DC Comics, Valiant and Marvel. As always, you can find the full list of releases here as well as everything that I’m getting here. Now without further ado, let’s crack on with the show, and feel free to let me know what comics you are picking up this week either in the comments section below or get in touch with me on twitter @baneofkings!

DAREDEVIL #2

Daredevil-02

Story; Mark Waid | Art: Chris Samnee | Publisher: Marvel Comics | Price: $3.99

* Daredevil’s in over his head in his new hometown, which isn’t at all as he remembers it!

* New threats, new obstacles…and a forgotten Marvel hero steps from the shadows to make him feel MOST unwelcome.

WHY? Whilst this isn’t a new jumping on point per say, we’re only one issue into Mark Waid’s already-epic Daredevil run and if you want to get on board I strongly recommend hunting down a copy of #1 if you can. It’s a series that is off to a fantastic start and with stunning artwork to boot from Chris Samnee as well this should be another excellent series.

ELEKTRA #1

Elektra-01

Story: W. Haden Blackman | Art: Mike Del Mundo | Publisher: Marvel Comics | Price: $3.99

Witness the beautifully violent return of the world’s deadliest assassin. A life spent in silent pain has led Elektra to the precipice of despair. As she prepares to shed her past and take her next step, everything you know about her will change! Death is no escape, but she will find her way as a new option opens up that will take Elektra to places no other Marvel character can go.

WHY? That cover looks awesome, and the interior art is just as good. This is going to be one of those books worth buying for the artwork alone but hopefully, given the fact that W. Haden Blackman has worked on Batwoman on the past, this storyline should be great as well. For all of you who were missing Williams III and Blackman on the aformentioned book, Elektra should be right up your street.

THE FLASH #30

The-Flash-30

Story: Robert Venditti | Art: Brett Booth | Publisher: DC Comics | Price: $2.99

An all-new creative team makes its debut to show the deadly consequences of The Flash’s speed powers. During the traumatic events of FOREVER EVIL, Central City suffered the worst that the Crime Syndicate could dish out. Now The Flash has returned to make things right, but there are limits to what even the Fastest Man Alive can do!

WHY? A new creative team normally means a new jumping on point as The Flash looks at the consequences that Forever Evil had on Central City, one of the worst hit cities by the Crime Syndicate. We don’t know how they got vanquished yet as the final issue of Forever Evil is yet to hit stands, and if you’re up for some good Flash stories from Robert Venditti, writer of the awesome XO Manowar, then this book should be right up your street.

HARBINGER #22

Harbinger-22

Story: Joshua Dysart | Art: Clayton Henry | Publisher: Valiant Comics | Price: $3.99

ALL-NEW ARC! DEATH OF A RENEGADE – PART 1 (of 3)! Peter Stanchek and his wayward team of teenage Renegades thought they had found freedom. They thought they could get their old lives back. They thought they could bring down Toyo Harada and the Harbinger Foundation. They were wrong. And now one of them will die.

WHY? Harbinger is another book that should be a jumping on point this month, and it’s been excellent so far, so this title should be a great read if you’re a newcomer looking for something superhero-ish that’s not from the Big Two. So this should be right up your street and I highly recommend getting on board this book while you can.

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED #0

Justice-League-United-00

Story: Jeff Lemire | Art: Mike McKone | Publisher: DC Comics | Price: $3.99

Top comics writer Jeff Lemire teams with superstar artist Mike McKone for the all-new monthly series JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED, starring the new team of powerful heroes Earth calls Justice League Canada! In the aftermath of FOREVER EVIL, Adam Strange is caught up in an adventure across the far reaches of the cosmos that will unite an unexpected team of heroes including Supergirl, Hawkman, Green Arrow, Stargirl, Martian Manhunter and Animal Man – but if they’re on the team, who exactly is Canadian? Plus: Don’t miss the debut of a new Canadian hero who will have a huge effect on the group!

WHY? A week with Jeff Lemire is always a good with, and a new superhero team, the Justice League Canada – should mean an awesome book indeed. We have the likes of Supergirl, Hawkman, Green Arrow, Stargirl and more – and it should be very interesting to see how veteran Green Arrow writer handles this, and given Lemire’s track record for putting out two of the best books at DC, Animal Man and Green Arrow, this is one that you won’t want to miss.
