THE TOP 5 MUST READ COMICS FOR THIS NCBD! (5 March 2014)

Velvet-04

Milo, aka “Bane of Kings”, runs down the Top 5 Must Read Comics for the First Week of March.

It’s the first week of the month and that always means that we’re going to get lots of new releases from a variety of publishers and lots of high quality ones. Pretty much anything from my pull list (here) could have made it onto this week’s pull as well as a heap of high quality other stuff that I don’t have the budget to follow or am so far behind on that there’d be no point – but in the end, I decided that these books are probably the biggest ‘must read’ comics this NCBD, and if you’re not reading them then you really should pick them up. There are two number ones so that shouldn’t be a problem, and whilst Green Arrow may be #29 of a series, it’s the third part in an arc where you can jump on with the opening chapter in that arc. And the other, Velvet – is only four issues in so there isn’t much catching up required. Here’s the full list of releases though in case I missed anything important.

GREEN ARROW #29

Green-Arrow-29

Story: Jeff Lemire | Art: Andrea Sorrentino | Publisher: DC Comics | Price: $2.99

‘The Outsiders War’ part 3! In the latest chapter of this game-changing epic, Green Arrow tries to take the fight to The Outsiders – but he’s badly outnumbered, and things are about to go from bad to worse! How can Ollie possibly survive?

WHY? Green Arrow has been amazing so far, with every chapter of The Outsiders War being better than the last. One thing’s for sure, this issue should be amazing, with the always awesome creative team of Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino, I can’t wait.

MOON KNIGHT #1

Moon-Knight-01

Story: Warren Ellis | Art: Declan Shalvey | Publisher: Marvel Comics | Price: $3.99

Marc Spector is Moon Knight!…Or is he? It’s hard to tell these days, especially when New York’s wildest vigilante protects the street with two-fisted justice and three-that’s right, count ’em-different personalities! But even with the mystical force of Khonshu fueling his crusade, how does the night’s greatest detective save a city that’s as twisted as he is? The road to victory is going to hurt. A lot. Marvel’s most mind-bending adventure begins NOW as Moon Knight sleuths his way to the rotten core of New York’s most bizarre mysteries!

WHY? I’m not at all familiar with Moon Knight as a character but this should be a good read especially as it’s from Warren Ellis, whose Iron Man work has been very awesome. This should be great.

SWAMP THING #29

Swamp-Thing-29

Story: Charles Soule | Art: Jesus Saiz | Publisher: DC Comics | Price: $2.99

The three-part ‘Gift of the Sureen’ arrives to usher in major changes to The Green! Alec Holland begins his journey across the globe in search of the truth behind an incredible offer from the mysterious cult known as the Sureen!

WHY? Swamp Thing is the best of Charles Soule’s run and I can’t wait to see more of this series. With a new three part story-arc, things are about to get very interesting so this book should be great indeed.

VEIL #1 (of 5)

Veil-01

Story: Greg Rucka | Art: Toni Fejzula | Publisher: Dark Horse Comics | Price: $3.50

A beautiful girl wakes up in an abandoned subway station with no memory of how she got there. When men try to hurt her . . . they wind up dead. Where did she come from? And what is she capable of?

WHY? Greg Rucka is doing an exceptional job over with Lazarus so this title should be just as awesome. It’s a mini-series as well, so it should be a pretty strong read.

VELVET #4

Velvet-04

Story: Ed Brubaker | Art: Steve Epting | Publisher: Image Comics | Price: $2.99

At the Masquerade everyone hides their true face, especially the double-agent that Velvet needs to get to if she has any hope of clearing her name. Don’t miss this hot new super-spy series from the best-selling creators of the Captain America: The Winter Soldier saga!

WHY? Ed Brubaker is a great writer, and this book has been great so far so should continue to impress. Already one of the best titles at Image, with just four issues in.
