The Top 5 Comics To Look Out For On Wednesday 27 2013 [Bane of Kings]

Aquaman #25

Milo, aka “Bane of Kings”, runs down the Top 5 Comics to look out for on Wednesday 27 featuring books from DC, Image and Marvel Comics.

Well, it’s the last week of November and we should be getting quite an interesting load of hot new comics hitting your shelves today. Not only do we bid farewell to Geoff Johns’ stint on Aquaman – having transferred the character from a joke to one of the most badass characters in the New 52, we also get a new series by Rick Remeder, the wrapping up of the Infinity event and even a new jumping on point in Red Lanterns. The full list of comics can be found here, whilst if you’re interested in my full pull list, you can check out this link.

AQUAMAN #25

Aquaman #25

Story: Geoff Johns | Art: Paul Pelletier | Publisher: DC Comics | Price: $3.99

THE EXTRA-SIZED CONCLUSION TO ‘DEATH OF A KING’! Aquaman now knows the true responsibility that comes with being King of Atlantis. But that means he and Mera face a difficult choice-one that could destroy the love that’s defined their lives! Villains become allies, friends become enemies, and the scope of Aquaman’s undersea world grows bigger than ever!

WHY? Geoff Johns’ last issue on the book and I’m sure he’s going to go out with a bang. I can’t wait to see where this goes and I’m going to be certainly following Arthur Curry’s adventures following this book despite the fact that Johns is calling it a day on this title. The character is just so good, and with Johns having transformed the character from joke into one of the most badass characters in the DCU, I for one will be interested to see how things wrap up and hopefully Johns can end his run on a high.

BLACK SCIENCE #1

Black Science #1

Story: Rick Remender | Art: Matteo Scalera, Dean White | Publisher: Image Comics | Price: $3.50

Grant McKay, former member of The Anarchistic Order of Scientists, has finally done the impossible: he has deciphered Black Science and punched through the barriers of reality. But what lay beyond the veil was not epiphany but chaos. Now Grant and his team are lost, living ghosts shipwrecked on an infinite ocean of alien worlds, barreling through the long-forgotten, ancient, and unimaginable dark realms. The only way is forward. The only question is how far are they willing to go, and how much can they endure, to get home again? Join writer RICK REMENDER and the superstar art team of MATTEO SCALERA & DEAN WHITE for this face-melting science fiction epic spanning the lifetimes of a cast of dimensional castaways lead by the man that caused it all.

WHY? Black Science is the first in a new series by Rick Remender, writer of Captain America and Uncanny Avengers and all round brilliant writer. Whilst I’m not keeping up with Uncanny Avengers I’m loving his run on Captain America and it’ll be very interesting to see what he can bring to the table with this first issue in this new series especially as I know next to nothing about this book. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out and if all goes to plan it’ll be another Image book on my pull list. Should be quite fun.

HAWKEYE #14

Hawkeye #14

Story: Matt Fraction | Art: Annie Wu | Publisher: Marvel Comics | Price: $2.99

THAT THING THAT HAPPENED TO KATE IN THE ANNUAL IS TOTALLY FOLLOWED UP ON!This one has it all! Characters! Plot! Story! Dialogue! Theme! Meaning! Message! Action! A little exposition! Fire! Arrows! Criminals! Neighbors! Large bodies of water! Clients! Cops who don’t care! A system that victimizes the victims! The dog! In a broken town where cynicism and apathy has its claws around the throat of the good and decent, LADY HAWKEYE is the only hero you can trust!

WHY? This issue of Hawkeye switches its attention to Kate Bishop, who has quickly shot right up there with Kitty Pryde and Rogue in terms of my favourite female characters at Marvel, and that’s mainly because of this series and Young Avengers. Both have been brilliant titles and I’m looking forward to another helping of Matt Fraction’s brilliant series, so it’ll be interesting to see where this goes from here.

INFINITY #6

Infinity #6

Story: Jonathan Hickman | Art: Jim Cheung, Dustin Weaver, Mark Morales, Guillermo Ortego, Dave Meikis, John Livesay | Publisher: Marvel Comics | Price: $4.50

All roads lead to this!

The over-sized conclusion of the Marvel Summer event!

The heroes of Earth versus the forces of Thanos!

WHY? Infinity has been the best Marvel Event that I’ve read yet and it’s also my first non-Bendis event that I’ve read. Hickman has really excelled over the course of the previous five issues and I’m really looking forward to seeing what he brings to the table with this one, hopefully providing something that wraps up and gives closure rather than just a lead-in to Inhumanity, like both Age of Ultron and Avengers vs. X-Men have been, the former towards the Hunger mini-series and Cataclysm and the latter to Marvel Now!. Even Battle of the Atom has not really given us a good closure, so I’m hoping for once that we get an event that closes within these six issues. I have faith in Jonathan Hickman to deliver something awesome though, so I’ll be looking forward to seeing where this goes.

RED LANTERNS #25

Red Lanterns #25

Story: Charles Soule | Art: Alessandro Vitti | Publisher: DC Comics | Price: $2.99

As the dust settles from “Lights Out,” Earth is no longer under the protection of the Green Lanterns. Sector 2814 is now the sole province of Guy Gardner and the RED LANTERNS! Criminals beware…psychopaths beware…hell, EVERYONE beware! How did this happen, you ask? Jump onboard with this issue and find out.

WHY? I had a sudden realization of two things earlier this week. The first thing is that I’m following too many ‘mainstream’ DC Books. The main bulk of my DC Pull list is related to Batman or Superman in some form. The second is that Charles Soule’s Superman/Wonder Woman is just incredibly brilliant, so based on that decision I have decided to leap on board both of Charles Soule’s other DC books (Red Lanterns, Swamp Thing) at the moment and with the Red Lanterns out of the Light’s Out crossover now might be the best place to start. I also plan on adding Animal Man  and The Flash as replacements forBatwoman, Supergirl, Earth 2, Justice League of America and Batman and.. on my pull-list in an attempt to explore the wider range of DC Superheroes so it’ll be interesting to see how this turns out. However this isn’t a definite as it will depend on what my store has in stock of this book and my budget on the day. Regardless, it’ll be certainly interesting to find out.
